I think that in most blog post, the publishdate and lastmod are both displayed, because as in the template, when both are compared, lastmod is always "bigger" than publishdate, because usually publishdate is of AAAA-MM-DD format and lasmod is of AAAA-MM-DD:HH:MM:SS.
